The month of October quite dear to my heart because it’s Breast Cancer Awareness month. Here is the story why:
Meet Kelly, my brother’s beautiful fiancé. Kelly was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year and after receiving such devastating news, you wouldn’t really expect smiles and massive amounts of positivity. That was Kelly! She wore the bravest face and the biggest smile throughout her entire ordeal and I don’t think I’ve ever admired a person’s braveness as much as I have hers.
My brother has been so amazing throughout this whole testing time, too! He has been so supportive and compassionate towards Kelly and I’m super proud of him. I know what you’re thinking, I’m his sister, and I have to sing his praises. But, really, I don’t. Anyone who knows him would confirm everything I have said and probably add in some more. My heart warms up every time I think about the two of them and this special love that they share. Seriously, I have tears in my eyes just thinking about it.
Kelly finished her chemo in August and is a few surgeries away from putting all of this behind her. So proud! Time for the wedding planning to commence 😀
Now that you understand why Cancer Awareness Month is dear to my heart, I urge you (if you’re a lady of course ;)) to have a breast exam. Kelly’s situation pushed me to have my first breast exam and ultra-sound and as nervous as I was, it was completely worth it and the experience was really not as bad as I imagined it would be. (I went for an ultra-sound as recommended by my gynae but all you have to do is go for the breast exam, your doctor will advise you from there :))
P.S. If you live in the Johannesburg area, please join us for the Avon Justine iThemba Johannesburg Walkathon on the 21st of October. We’re crusading for awareness and hope!
