I’m pretty much on the fence about the whole Valentine’s Day deal because, on the one hand, I love celebrating love and on the other it’s all far too cheesy and expensive for my taste.
That’s why the boyfriend and I have always tried to keep Valentine’s Day celebrations as sweet and simple as we can. For us it’s it’s all about quality time spent with each other and that’s why we don’t even worry with gifts and extravagant dinners.
Here are my favourite Not-So-Extravagant Valentine’s Day ideas:
- Picnic under the stars
Picnicking under the stars is one of my favourite ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day! If the weather is great, lay out a blanket in your garden and surround yourselves with plenty of candles and your favourite snacks. Raining on Valentine’s day? Move the picnic indoors to your lounge and stick glow in the dark stars to your ceiling – romantic success!
- Drive-in Movie
Another fun idea is dinner and a movie, a drive-in movie! Pack a few treats, loads of blankets and pillows, reverse your car into your parking spot, open up your boot and enjoy the movie while cuddling your valentine. Menlyn Park charges R65 per car and you’re treated to two movies – bargain!
- Fondue for Two
Chocolate fondue anyone? There is just something so romantic about a fondue and there are so many options to choose from. You could start off with an oil or cheese fondue, followed by a decadent chocolate fondue, dipping strawberries and cherries for dessert.
- Chocolate Tasting
I came across this idea on The Dating Diva’s blog and think it’s awesome!
All that you need is a few different flavours and brands of chocolate, a tasting mat and a scorecard. You and your Valentine will rate each chocolate according to look, touch, sound, smell and, of course, taste.
Add some wine and candlelight and it sounds like the perfect evening to me!
P.S. Each date night needs to be minus any cell phones or social media – no one really cares how romantic your valentine’s day was anyway 😉
